What is the ideal thickness for shower glass?
The thickness of the glass is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a shower enclosure, as it directly affects the safety, stability, durability and overall appearance of the installation. There is no single thickness that is suitable for every situation, as each type of shower enclosure – whether sliding, hinged or walk-in – and every panel size requires a different level of strength. Choosing the right thickness therefore means taking into account the type of opening, the overall dimensions of the enclosure, whether it features profiles or hinges, the type of glass used and the level of safety required.
The most common glass thicknesses for shower enclosures are 4 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm and 10 mm, although some bespoke design solutions may use 12 mm glass or even thicker. 4 mm or 5 mm glass is generally used for shower enclosures with sliding doors or systems where the panels are supported by metal frames. It is lightweight, practical and well suited to compact shower enclosures or installations where the glass is properly supported by the surrounding structure. Although it offers a good balance between functionality and lightness, it is less stable when used without adequate structural support.
6 mm glass is now the most common choice for modern shower enclosures, as it offers an excellent balance between lightness and performance. It is suitable for sliding shower enclosures and hinged doors with standard-sized panels, ideally when supported by framing profiles. At this thickness, the glass already provides good mechanical strength for medium-sized panels without becoming excessively heavy or difficult to install.
8 mm glass offers improved performance for shower enclosures with larger doors and minimalist hinges, providing excellent stability even without surrounding profiles. It is particularly suitable for fixed panels, walk-in showers and hinged doors, where the glass is often installed without a frame or with very slim profiles.
10 mm glass, on the other hand, is generally used for large shower enclosures, striking walk-in shower configurations and spa or wellness environments. This thickness provides maximum strength and stability, making it ideal for frameless or self-supporting glass installations. However, because it is thicker and heavier, it also requires appropriate supporting structures and professional installation.
The choice of glass thickness also depends on the size of the panel: the larger the glass panel, whether in height or width, the greater the thickness required to prevent flexing or instability. It is also important to remember that, regardless of its thickness, glass used in shower enclosures should always be toughened to ensure impact resistance and safety in the event of breakage. In addition, glass thickness also influences the overall visual effect: thicker glass gives the shower enclosure a more substantial, refined and premium appearance.
